Create Hyperlink to a Website
In the Microsoft Word application, whenever you type a website URL (example: www.example.com) and press space or enter, the website URL will automatically convert into a hyperlink. But, to create a custom hyperlink using proper Text or an Image linking to a website then follow the steps below:
Step #1: Select the text or click on an image that you want to convert to a hyperlink.
Step #2: Open the Insert Hyperlink window by pressing Ctrl+K (on Windows) or Command+K (on Mac). Alternatively, you can open this from the menu by clicking on the Insert tab and then clicking Link under the Links section.
Step #3: From the left panel, click on Existing File or Web Page.
Step #4: At the bottom of the window, type or paste the complete link URL (including the ‘https://’) into the address field.
Step #5 (Optional): You can add ScreenTip by clicking on the button at the top-right of the Insert Hyperlink window. It is a custom message that will show up when someone hovers over the link. If you don’t set the ScreenTip, it will display the file path or website address instead.
Step #6: Then click OK to save your link. You can now test your hyperlink by holding down the Ctrl (on Windows) or Command (on Mac) and then clicking on the link.
Creating Hyperlink to Another Document
Step #1: Select the text or click on the image which you want to convert to a hyperlink.
Step #2: Open the Insert Hyperlink window by pressing Ctrl+K (on Windows) or Command+K (on Mac). Alternatively, you can open this from the menu by clicking on the Insert tab and then clicking Link under the Links section.
Step #3: From the left panel, click on Existing File or Web Page.
Step #4: From the center panel, browse and select the file that you want to link. You can also create a New Document from the left panel and choose the location for the same.

Using Bookmark and Creating Hyperlink within Same Document
You can also create a link to a specific part within your document. This can be useful especially if you are making a table of contents, or want to give reference data on a separate page. To do this, first, you will need to create a Bookmark.
Step #1: Select a text, or image, or just place your cursor in the spot you want.
Step #2: From the top bar, click on the Insert tab, and click on Bookmark from the Links section.
Step #3: Now here you enter a name for the bookmark. See to it that the name is properly descriptive and recognizable, it will be convenient, especially while working with too many bookmarks or more than one person is working on the document. There are certain rules to naming the bookmark:
- It must start with an alphabet.
- It can contain only alphabets, numbers, and underscores.
- Spaces are not allowed
- An example of a bookmark can be ‘Example_1’
Step #4: Now click on Add to insert the bookmark. In the modern version of Microsoft Word, you won’t see the bookmark codes on the page, but if you are using an earlier version, it may be visible and is surrounded by brackets.
So once your bookmark is ready, let’s create a hyperlink to it.
Step #5: Select the text or click on the image which you want to convert to a hyperlink.
Step #6: Open the Insert Hyperlink window by pressing Ctrl+K (on Windows) or Command+K (on Mac). Alternatively, you can open this from the menu by clicking on the Insert tab and then clicking Link under the Links section.
Step #7: Now click on Place in This Document in the left panel.
Step #8: From the center panel, select the bookmark you want to link to. Expand the bookmark tree if it isn’t already and select the bookmark you created.

Creating Hyperlink with Email Address
You can also create a hyperlink with a mail-to: email address. This allows you to create an email button on your document, which when clicked will open a compose email window of the email software on your computer or phone, and the email address field will be already filled. To create a hyperlink with an email address, follow the steps below:
Step #1: Select the text or click on the image which you want to convert to a hyperlink.
Step #2: Open the Insert Hyperlink window by pressing Ctrl+K (on Windows) or Command+K (on Mac). Alternatively, you can open this from the menu by clicking on the Insert tab and then clicking Link under the Links section.
Step #3: Click on the E-mail Address in the left panel.
Step #4: Here enter the email address and subject. This will be the email address to which the reader will be sending the emails. And what you enter into the Subject field will be automatically filled into the email subject while composing an email, but it can be still changed by the reader.
Step #5: Then click OK to save your link. You can now test your hyperlink by holding down the Ctrl (on Windows) or Command (on Mac) and then clicking on the link.
